Dual exhibition of the artists Annabel Overbury and Javier Infantes, from 8th of March until 20th of May
Curator Conchi Alvarez
Milan Kundera in “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” raises a vital question, the choice between weight and lightness, which is something that Parmenides had already firmly replied: lightness is positive, weight is negative, while for Beethoven it was the other way around…lightness and duality.
For R.A.E., the first meaning for the term lightness, as a quality of light, is “lightweight, of little weight”; the second, “fine, subtle”. And all these adjectives are present in the works of art as a main theme of this exhibition. Levity and subtlety of papers, panels and canvases, compared with the strength and weight of frames that, far from stifling the paintings, enhance their weightlessness and delicacy. Frameworks that help to “frame” the work of art, refine the vision and perspective that we have of it. Plastic pieces that narrated different stories long ago, now stand elegant, delicate, close to golden proportions.
Levity double-sided by two artists with seemingly very different forms of expression, antithetical, but form a complementary duality, not reiterative and have their meeting point in this joint exhibition. An elegant and harmonious rhythm marks the path of this exhibition which confirms the richness of symbiosis, its immense creative flow.
Javier Infantes is from Estepona, based in New York, and who has worked with the gallery for years. He investigates and creates in the field of abstraction, balancing between abstract expressionism and certain informalism. His research and study is the archeology of the memory. His explorations lead him to excavate the strata and sediments of memories with a range of techniques to try not only to describe, but conceptualize, amalgamating those memories in resin to remain intact. In that viscous and transparent source, the elements are at the service of the idea, and so dyes, pigments, metallic paint, spray paint, glitter in various colors, materialize that remembrance.
The other side of duality is Annabel Overbury, British artist based in Estepona. Her works of art browse the most poetic figuration in intimate scenes, personalized and still life based on delicate cut flowers. Watercolors and acrylics are added to a very British artistic training, with subsequent fascination for the Mediterranean light. In her paintings the subtle term acquires its full meaning, as the nature she describes is full of lyricism, forming a pictorial environmentalism of superb freshness. Plenairist paintings generated in situ, outdoors, to be captured later in her studio, in a process of conceptualization and syncretism that ends in light and accurate strokes on paper or canvas.
