ABOUT JAN VALDES
The artist was born in Havana (Cuba) in 1979. He studied Drawing, Painting, and Engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro (Havana/Cuba), where he has also worked as a teacher. He has participated in individual and group exhibitions in Cuba, Spain, and Canada. His work is figurative, colorful, and filled with a large dose of humor. Multiple influences emerge in his paintings that contribute to enriching his critical spirit. He reinterprets and paraphrases some works by the greatest painters in pieces of baroque compositions where exuberant nudes proliferate. But he also uses extraordinary literary pieces to reflect on great existential themes. As a Cuban artist, a critical vision of capitalist society and its contradictions could not be missed.
