“ANY PAST TIME, WAS BETTER?”
curated by Conchi Alvarez
The exhibition takes as its starting point the manriquenian affirmation “… any past time, was better.” Phrase known to all, used a thousand times and touted as a haven of yearning when the present becomes painful. This exhibition challenges the claim “was better”, hence the question mark. For this exhibition I use works from emerging artists, juxtaposing works from the past with those of today in some cases, in others, emerging from the past hobnobbing with today’s works to assess whether, as stated in Jorge Manrique´s verse, yesterday’s art at STOA is better than today’s art, or not. Seven years of history and a perfect moment to stop and meditate.
The show aims to engage the viewers to make their own judgment and reflect on the passage of time, the future, the need to become aware of the great values, those that do not change with the fashions; is it really so? In Art, only great works stand the test of time; is this true?
